The fourth-floor lodging where Alyona Ivanovna receives pledges and locks away small valuables. Its bells, doors, inner rooms, and stair landings are all noticed carefully because entering and leaving are the true difficulty. At first it is simply a place Raskolnikov studies too closely.
Part I, Chapter VII
The flat becomes the scene of the double murder, the search for keys and pledges, and the almost impossible escape past visitors at the door.

At the police office, scraps of talk about the flat's visitors and timing make Raskolnikov faint.
