Avdotya Romanovna Raskolnikov
Also known as Dounia, Avdotya Romanovna.
Raskolnikov's sister, introduced through their mother's long letter. She has worked as a governess in the Svidrigaïlov household and endured scandal with dignity. Her proposed marriage to Luzhin is presented as a practical sacrifice that Raskolnikov immediately resists.
Part III, Chapter I
She arrives in Petersburg with Pulcheria Alexandrovna and finds Raskolnikov ill, harsh, and determined to break her engagement.
Part IV, Chapter II
She rejects Luzhin after his letter and conduct expose the bargain behind his courtship.
Part V, Chapter V
She waits in the city in painful suspense over her brother's strange coldness, while Razumihin appoints himself her family's faithful guardian.
Part VI, Chapter V
Lured to Svidrigailov's rooms by a promise to save her brother, she finds herself his prisoner, snatches up a revolver, and fires at him before flinging the weapon away.
Part VI, Chapter VII
Svidrigaïlov locks her in and tries to force a private reckoning. She fires at him, refuses him, and leaves with her will intact.
Epilogue
In the epilogue she marries Razumihin, and their household becomes part of the patient hope surrounding Raskolnikov's sentence.
