The assistant superintendent at the police office, nicknamed the Explosive Lieutenant because his temper breaks out suddenly. His first importance is not subtle investigation but noise, insult, and official pressure in a room where Raskolnikov is already barely holding himself together.

Raskolnikov returns to Ilya Petrovitch after the Hay Market scene and confesses to the murders, making the blustering official the accidental receiver of the final statement.
