After the murders, Koch and the student Pestryakov arrive at Alyona Ivanovna's flat and find the door apparently locked. Their knocking, waiting, and suspicion turn Raskolnikov's escape into a sequence of doors and footsteps in which every second matters.
Epilogue
Their near-discovery becomes part of the trial's reconstruction of how clumsy and lucky the escape really was.
