Person

Lizaveta Ivanovna

Also known as Lizaveta.

The younger half-sister of Alyona Ivanovna, known in the Hay Market as timid, useful, and much imposed upon. Raskolnikov overhears that she will be away from the flat at a fixed hour, and the chance knowledge takes on terrible practical value. She is first important because her absence seems to open a door.

Part I, Chapter VII

She returns unexpectedly with a bundle in her arms and is murdered by Raskolnikov moments after Alyona.

Part II, Chapter VI

The memory of the gentle, harmless sister he had no quarrel with begins to torment Raskolnikov more than the old woman's death ever could.

Part IV, Chapter IV

It emerges that she had been Sonia's friend, the one who brought her to the Gospel, and that the two had once exchanged crosses.

Part V, Chapter IV

Sonia reveals that Lizaveta gave her a cross, making the murdered woman part of the spiritual burden Sonia asks Raskolnikov to accept.
