Event

Marmeladov's Death

Marmeladov is run over by a carriage and carried back to his family's room to die. The scene gathers Katerina Ivanovna's pride, Sonia's shame, the children's terror, and Raskolnikov's sudden generosity into one crowded deathbed. It is one of the book's first public reckonings with pity.

Part V, Chapter II

The memorial dinner attempts to turn his death into ceremony, but poverty and pride make even mourning unstable.
