Also known as his mother's letter, the letter from his mother.

The long letter from Pulcheria Alexandrovna that brings Dounia's scandal, Luzhin's proposal, family money, and maternal hope into Raskolnikov's room. It turns his private misery into a family drama and makes Dounia's marriage feel to him like another sacrifice demanded by poverty.

Part III, Chapter I

The arrival of Pulcheria Alexandrovna and Dounia tests the hopes and fears the letter had tried to manage from a distance.

Part IV, Chapter II

Dounia's break with Luzhin answers the marriage bargain the letter first presented as practical salvation.
