Raskolnikov goes first to the Hay Market, bows down, kisses the earth, and then makes his way to the police office. The confession is halting and nearly missed, but he returns and says what he has done. The public act begins the punishment that no private theory could contain.
Epilogue
The epilogue carries the confession into sentence, Siberia, Sonia's letters, and the long beginning of inward change.
