Svidrigaïlov lures Dounia to his rooms with knowledge of Raskolnikov's crime, locks the door, and tries to force a moral bargain. Dounia resists him with terror, clarity, and a revolver, making the scene a contest between possession and will.

After Dounia fires and still refuses him, Svidrigaïlov lets her go, and his own remaining future narrows sharply.
