The morning after his proposal, Mr. Darcy gives Elizabeth a long letter answering her two charges: his hand in separating Mr. Bingley from Jane, and the true history of his dealings with Mr. Wickham. It overturns much of what she believed and forces her to weigh her own pride and prejudice.
Chapter XXXVI
Reading and re-reading it on her walk, Elizabeth is brought up short: 'Till this moment I never knew myself.'
