The long-promised ball Mr. Bingley gives at Netherfield. Elizabeth, hoping to dance with Mr. Wickham, is instead claimed by the awkward Mr. Collins and then, to her surprise, by Mr. Darcy; meanwhile her own family's want of conduct is painfully on display before the Netherfield party.
Chapter XXI
The morning after, the whole Netherfield party leaves for London, and Jane is left to wonder at Mr. Bingley's sudden absence.
