Alyosha and Lise's Engagement
Also known as when you reach the legal age we will be married, I didn't write to you yesterday in joke, but in earnest, He has chosen me as his wife, we shall be always together, we shall be happy.
Alyosha and Lise's Engagement begins in the Hohlakov house when Lise tries to take back the letter she sent him. Alyosha says he believed the letter was earnest, and calmly imagines leaving the monastery, finishing his studies, and marrying her when she is of age. The scene is half comic and half solemn, because Lise keeps laughing and testing him while Alyosha answers as if the future has already been accepted.
V-I. The Engagement
Lise privately confesses that the letter was written in earnest, and Alyosha refuses to give it back because it is precious to him. They accept the future marriage more openly, kiss awkwardly, and speak of being together after Father Zossima's death.
