The Caucasus first appears as one station in Dmitri 's irregular youth. He serves there after military school, amid promotion, dueling, degradation, renewed promotion, wild living, and debt. The place marks the restless military part of his life before his open conflict with Fyodor Pavlovitch .
X-VII. Ilusha
Much later, the Caucasus returns as an almost impossible medical prescription, a distant place imagined as curative precisely because it is so far from the family's present misery.
