The Margin

Place

District Court

Also known as our district court.

The district court is the best hall in the town and the place where Dmitri's trial begins. By the opening of the case, it is overflowing with local society, visitors from other cities, lawyers, distinguished guests, and a gallery full of intense curiosity. Its raised platform, jury table, prisoner space, and evidence table turn the Karamazov household disaster into a public spectacle of law.

XII-V. A Sudden Catastrophe

The hall is thrown into confusion when Ivan produces the notes and collapses, then Katerina produces Dmitri's letter as new evidence.

XII-X. The Speech For The Defense. An Argument That Cuts Both Ways

The courtroom becomes the stage for Fetyukovitch's defense, with applause, interruptions, and the President's warnings testing its official decorum.

XII-XIV. The Peasants Stand Firm

After the speeches and deliberation, the same hall receives the guilty answers from the jury, then breaks into shocked uproar.
