Dmitri's Bloodstained Clothes

Also known as Mitya's shirt, a blood-stained sleeve, the bloodstained shirt.

Dmitri's bloodstained clothes are taken during the humiliating search behind the curtains at Mokroe. The officials examine his coat, trousers, waistcoat, cap, and shirt, finding a huge dry patch of blood on the coat and a bloodied cuff turned inside. Dmitri explains the blood by his attempt to tend Grigory, but the clothes are kept as material evidence.

XII-I. The Fatal Day

At the trial, Mitya's shirt with the blood-stained sleeve and his coat stained in patches lie on the table of material proofs. They are displayed beside the pestle, envelope, ribbon, and other objects in the case.

XII-XII. And There Was No Murder Either

In the defense's account, the visible blood on the clothes is part of the dangerous accumulation of impressions against Dmitri. Fetyukovitch warns that such objects can feel like proof even when their meaning is contested.
