Dmitri's Dream of the Babe

Also known as a strange dream, I've had a good dream, talking about a babe, It's for that babe I am going to Siberia now.

Dmitri's dream comes after the witness examinations, when he falls asleep exhausted on a chest at Mokroe. He sees himself driven through sleet toward a poor burnt village where women stand in misery and a baby cries from cold and hunger. He wakes with a new tenderness, grateful even for the pillow placed under his head, and says he has had a good dream.

XI-I. At Grushenka’s

Grushenka tells Alyosha that Dmitri has been speaking emotionally about a babe and Siberia, but she does not understand the image. To her it is mysterious, moving, and tied to his new talk of suffering.
