Dmitri's escape plan is the secret Ivan has proposed to him before the verdict. In the prison interview, Dmitri tells Alyosha that Ivan can arrange a costly escape and passage to America with Grushenka. The plan immediately becomes a question of conscience because it would let him run from the suffering he has begun to imagine as his cross.

Ivan's own account shows the plan is also a sacrifice of money and pride, meant to help Dmitri while easing Ivan's torment over whether he wanted his father's death.

After the verdict, Katerina holds Ivan's detailed arrangements and nearly ten thousand roubles, promising to carry the plan through if Ivan remains too ill.
