Dmitri's Money Amulet

Also known as my amulet, a locket round my neck.

Dmitri's money amulet is the sewn rag in which he says he carried the hidden half of Katerina Ivanovna's three thousand roubles. He tells the officials he wore it round his neck for a month and tore it off on the way from Fenya's to Perhotin's. The little bag matters because it is his explanation for the money he brought to Mokroe.

IX-VIII. The Evidence Of The Witnesses. The Babe

The officials and witnesses still find the amulet story hard to believe. Their questions about the missing rag, the sewing, and the lost remains make Dmitri's explanation look fragile in the protocol.

XII-XI. There Was No Money. There Was No Robbery

Fetyukovitch uses the amulet in his defense of Dmitri's money story. He argues that a Karamazov nature could preserve the hidden half from a sense of honor while still acting wildly elsewhere.
