Father Ferapont's Cell

Also known as his cell apart, the corner where Father Ferapont's cell stood, this same solitary cell, his wooden cell by the apiary.

Father Ferapont's cell stands in a corner beyond the apiary, separated from the ordinary rhythm of the hermitage. It is an old wooden hut once associated with another ascetic, but its many icons and constantly burning lamps make it look almost like a chapel. At this horizon, the place explains Ferapont's authority: distance, roughness, fasting, and a private world of visions.

VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption

The cell becomes the place from which news of Zossima's decay reaches Ferapont and from which he emerges to intensify the scandal in the hermitage.
