Father Iosif

Also known as Father Librarian.

Father Iosif is the monastery librarian who brings Ivan's recent article into the discussion in Father Zossima's cell. He explains that the article answers a book on ecclesiastical courts and Church jurisdiction. His role is quiet but important: he frames the intellectual debate before Father Paissy, Ivan, Miusov, and the elder take it up.

II-VI. Why Is Such A Man Alive?

During the scandal in the cell, Father Iosif objects when Fyodor Pavlovitch crudely defends Grushenka before the monks.

IV-I. Father Ferapont

He is present in Zossima's cell as the elder weakens and the monks gather around his final counsel.

VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption

After Zossima's death, Father Iosif reads the Gospel over the coffin and tries gently to answer the claim that bodily corruption disproves the elder's holiness.
