Fyodor and Dmitri's rivalry over Grushenka becomes explicit during the scandal in Zossima's cell. Fyodor Pavlovitch accuses Dmitri of abandoning his betrothed for a certain enchantress, while Dmitri answers that his father is jealous of him and has begun forcing his own attentions on her. The rivalry turns a family dispute about money into a humiliating competition for Grushenka.

III-V. The Confession Of A Passionate Heart—“Heels Up”

Dmitri tells Alyosha that Fyodor's dealings with Snegiryov and the I.O.U.s are bound up with jealousy over Grushenka. He understands his father not only as a debtor and enemy, but as a direct rival.

When Dmitri bursts into Fyodor's house searching for Grushenka, the rivalry becomes physical panic: father and son both imagine she may be hidden nearby, and the household is thrown into violence.
