Fyodor Pavlovitch's Envelope

Also known as the envelope in which Fyodor Pavlovitch was supposed to have put three thousand roubles, the envelope with the notes, the envelope of notes, the torn envelope, the torn cover.

The envelope becomes visible at the trial as a supposed container for three thousand roubles that Fyodor Pavlovitch was said to have set aside for a certain person. Fetyukovitch asks witness after witness whether anyone actually saw it before the crime, and the answer is no. At this horizon it is not proof but a contested object, already separating rumor, evidence, and legal strategy.

XII-V. A Sudden Catastrophe

Ivan brings a roll of notes into court and says they came from Smerdyakov, making the envelope part of his sudden accusation.

XII-VIII. A Treatise On Smerdyakov

The prosecutor argues that the torn envelope points to a frantic robbery by Dmitri, not to a careful theft by Smerdyakov.

XII-XI. There Was No Money. There Was No Robbery

The defense reverses the point, arguing that the torn envelope proves neither that the money was still inside nor that any robbery occurred.
