Grushenka's Break with Her Former Lover

Also known as I’ve been a fool, a fool, I've been a fool, a fool, curse those five years.

This is the Mokroe scene in which Grushenka sees that the man she has imagined for five years is not the man before her. The former lover's dignity, broken Russian, and talk of forgiveness turn her hope into anger and shame. Dmitri's clumsy attempt to buy him off only sharpens the insult, and the exposure of the Poles' card trick completes the collapse.

VIII-VIII. Delirium

After the quarrel, Grushenka grieves in the bedroom corner for the love and anger she had preserved, then names Dmitri as the man her heart has chosen.
