Honor and Shame
Also known as I shan’t be a scoundrel?, our shame, does not sell his honor, What should I say to my boy, vindicated his honor, awfully proud and triumphant, crying with mortification, a proud man.
Honor and Shame is the moral pressure that makes charity dangerous for Captain Snegiryov. After Dmitri has publicly humiliated him, money offered through Katerina's commission can look like rescue, payment, or a second disgrace. The captain's poverty makes the help necessary, but his son's opinion makes accepting it almost impossible.
