Lise's Invalid Carriage

Also known as invalid carriage.

Lise's invalid carriage is the long reclining chair in which Madame Hohlakov's fourteen-year-old daughter is wheeled to wait for Father Zossima. It marks Lise's recent paralysis without turning her into a silent invalid: she laughs, watches Alyosha, and speaks with quick mischief from within it. The chair makes her illness visible in the monastery portico among the peasant women and visitors of rank.

IV-IV. At The Hohlakovs’

At the Hohlakovs' house, Lise has herself wheeled back into the room when Alyosha arrives, making the chair part of her sharp, theatrical control of the scene.
