Katerina and Grushenka's Meeting

Also known as Both Together, the first time we've met, yesterday's scene with Grushenka.

Katerina Ivanovna receives Grushenka in her drawing room, hoping that generosity and admiration will settle the rivalry over Dmitri. For a few minutes the meeting looks like reconciliation, with kisses, hand-holding, and extravagant praise. Grushenka then refuses the symbolic return kiss and turns the scene into humiliation, leaving Katerina enraged and exposed before Alyosha.

III-XI. Another Reputation Ruined

Alyosha retells the whole meeting to Dmitri at the crossroads, and Dmitri's laughter shows how sharply he understands both women.

IV-IV. At The Hohlakovs’

The previous day's humiliation still troubles Katerina and the people around her, shaping how they read every new message from Dmitri.

IV-V. A Laceration In The Drawing-Room

The scene continues to define Katerina's pride and suffering, making her relation to Grushenka a wound as much as a rivalry.
