Kolya and Alyosha's First Meeting

Also known as ask Karamazov to come out to him, One must sniff round a bit first, make your acquaintance, our first meeting, made your acquaintance, this meeting, our talk has been like a declaration of love.

Kolya and Alyosha's first meeting is the encounter Kolya arranges before entering Ilusha's room. Kolya asks Smurov to summon Alyosha outside because he wants to measure him privately and make the right impression. The meeting begins as a schoolboy's proud performance, but it is driven by Kolya's genuine curiosity about Alyosha.

X-IV. The Lost Dog

Kolya tells Alyosha about his friendship with Ilusha, the Zhutchka incident, and the penknife wound. Alyosha's serious, equal treatment wins him more quickly than Kolya expected.

X-VI. Precocity

After the sickroom visit, the conversation opens into Kolya's borrowed politics, religious doubts, vanity, and fear of being ridiculous. Alyosha names both the danger and the promise in him, and Kolya admits that their talk feels like a declaration of love.
