Lise's Letter to Alyosha

Also known as the letter I sent you yesterday.

Lise's letter is the private note she sent to Alyosha before his visit to Madame Hohlakov's house. She is embarrassed by it, calls it a joke, and urgently asks him to return it while her mother is out of the room. Alyosha says he believed what she wrote and treats the letter as something serious between them.

V-I. The Engagement

Lise admits the letter was written in earnest, not as a joke. Alyosha reveals that he has had it with him all along and refuses to surrender it, calling it precious to him.
