Lise's room is the private chamber from which Lise Hohlakov listens, teases, and controls how much of herself visitors can see. When Alyosha arrives, she peeps through the door crack, has herself wheeled there, and takes charge of dressing his bitten finger. The room lets her be hidden and commanding at once, half sickroom and half stage.
V-I. The Engagement
The room becomes a private place of confession when Lise and Alyosha talk without Madame Hohlakov present. There Lise admits her letter was serious and the two speak openly about a future engagement.
XI-II. The Injured Foot
Alyosha is trying to reach Lise's room when Madame Hohlakov delays him in her boudoir. He learns that Ivan has secretly visited Lise there, sharpening the room's sense of hidden traffic and overheard feeling.
XI-III. A Little Demon
The room turns feverish and confessional as Lise talks to Alyosha about cruelty, self-destruction, and the note she wants carried to Ivan. After Alyosha leaves, she shuts her finger in the door and sits watching the injury.
