Little Bronze Cannon

Also known as a little copper cannon, a little bronze cannon, the little bronze cannon.

The little bronze cannon is a toy weapon Kolya carries in his satchel. He shows it to the lodger children as a reward for courage, explaining its wheels, touch-hole, shot, and powder with theatrical seriousness. It is both a toy and a genuine danger, which is part of its fascination for the children.

X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside

Kolya brings the cannon to Ilusha as a present and has it fired in the sickroom with a tiny charge. When Ilusha's mother begs for it, Ilusha gives it to her, and Kolya yields the gift with a polite bow.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

At Ilusha's coffin, Captain Snegiryov remembers the little cannon as one of the things Ilusha lovingly gave his mother. The toy returns as part of the family's grief over the child.
