Lizaveta's Bath-House Childbirth

Also known as another strange and marvelous event, just given birth to a child, the groans of a woman.

The strange night discovery that follows the burial of Grigory and Marfa's own child. Marfa hears what she thinks is a newborn's cry, while Grigory hears a woman's groans from the locked garden and traces them to the bath-house. There he finds Lizaveta Smerdyastchaya, speechless and dying, with a baby beside her.

III-II. Lizaveta

The baby is saved, Lizaveta dies at dawn, and Grigory places the child on Marfa's lap with the command to nurse him. The child is christened Pavel, takes the patronymic Fyodorovitch by town habit, and receives the surname Smerdyakov from Fyodor Pavlovitch.
