Marya Kondratyevna is the daughter of the house next to Fyodor Pavlovitch's garden. Alyosha first finds her sitting near the bushes with Smerdyakov, listening admiringly while he sings and lectures her. She is flattered by his polished boots, foreign airs, and contemptuous cleverness, and she speaks to Alyosha with eager politeness when he asks after Dmitri.
VIII-III. Gold-Mines
Marya Kondratyevna tells Dmitri that Smerdyakov is ill and that Ivan has gone away. Her household's nearness to Fyodor's garden makes her a useful source of scraps and rumors.
IX-II. The Alarm
After the alarm at Fyodor Pavlovitch's house, Marya Kondratyevna is the neighbor who hears the earlier cry and runs to alert the police captain. Her role shifts from listener to witness.
XI-VII. The Second Visit To Smerdyakov
Smerdyakov is lodging in Marya Kondratyevna's wooden house after leaving the hospital, and people suppose he may be staying there as her betrothed. She and her mother treat him as superior to themselves.
XI-VIII. The Third And Last Interview With Smerdyakov
Marya Kondratyevna lets Ivan into Smerdyakov's lodging during the snowstorm and warns that Smerdyakov is quiet but unwell. She remains just outside the room while Ivan and Smerdyakov speak.
XI-X. “It Was He Who Said That”
Marya Kondratyevna discovers Smerdyakov hanging when she goes in to clear away the samovar. Shaken and frantic, she runs first to Alyosha before the authorities are told.
