Marya Kondratyevna's House

Also known as Marya Kondratyevna's cottage.

Marya Kondratyevna's house is the neighboring place from which Dmitri keeps watch behind Fyodor Pavlovitch's garden. In his account to the officials, it is part of the route and cover of his jealous surveillance. It is also connected with Smerdyakov, who has brought Dmitri information there.

XI-V. Not You, Not You!

Ivan walks to Marya Kondratyevna's new lodging, a tiny slanting wooden house where Smerdyakov is living while ill. The house shifts from a background vantage point to the place of Ivan's confrontation.

XI-VII. The Second Visit To Smerdyakov

The lodging is shown in detail: a dilapidated wooden house divided by a passage, with Marya and her mother on one side and Smerdyakov in the better room on the left. His room is extremely hot, scantily furnished, and busy with the rustle of cockroaches under the blue paper.

XI-VIII. The Third And Last Interview With Smerdyakov

The final interview between Ivan and Smerdyakov takes place in the same overheated room, now crowded by a table and sofa. There Smerdyakov produces the three thousand roubles and gives Ivan his account of the murder.

XI-X. “It Was He Who Said That”

Marya Kondratyevna runs from the cottage to Alyosha after finding Smerdyakov hanging on a nail in the wall. Alyosha sees him there and then informs the police captain.
