The medical experts are called to assess Dmitri's mental condition. Doctor Herzenstube and the Moscow doctor both see abnormality, while Varvinsky insists that Dmitri is excited but sane. Their disagreement turns on small observations, even on where Dmitri ought to have looked when entering the courtroom, and the scene becomes oddly comic.

The prosecutor prepares to use the doctors' evidence only narrowly, as support for Dmitri's fixed idea about the three thousand roubles rather than for insanity.
