Metropolis Tavern

Also known as The Metropolis tavern, the "Metropolis" tavern, The Metropolis, the "Metropolis", the 'Metropolis'.

The Metropolis Tavern is the low tavern named by Captain Snegiryov when he imagines where Dmitri might ask forgiveness. It is already tied to the insult against the captain and to the public shame that wounded Ilusha. It stands as a noisy town setting where private honor becomes a spectacle.

IV-VII. And In The Open Air

The captain explains that Dmitri dragged him out of the tavern by the beard and into the market-place while schoolboys, including Ilusha, were coming from school. The place becomes inseparable from Ilusha's memory of his father's humiliation.

V-III. The Brothers Make Friends

Ivan and Alyosha meet at the Metropolis behind a screen in the first room from the entrance. Around their talk are waiters, billiards, corks, organ music, and ordinary tavern bustle.

VIII-III. Gold-Mines

Dmitri's earlier acquaintance with a young weapons collector at the Metropolis helps him pawn his pistols for ten roubles. The tavern remains part of the chain of errands and desperate improvisations around his need for money.

XI-VII. The Second Visit To Smerdyakov

Katerina's written proof against Dmitri is traced to the Metropolis, where he drunkenly asked for pen and paper and wrote the frantic letter about getting the three thousand roubles. The tavern's cheap paper and cramped margins become part of the evidence.
