Pyotr Alexandrovitch Miusov is a cousin on Mitya's mother's side who returns from Paris and intervenes in the neglected child's upbringing. He is wealthy, liberal, Europeanized, and proud of his culture. His estate borders the local monastery, where he is already involved in a dispute over local rights. At this point he is both a maternal relation and a representative of enlightened landowning society.

Arriving at the monastery, Miusov is irritated by Fyodor Pavlovitch before the visit has properly begun, anxious that Fyodor's buffoonery will compromise him.

II-VIII. The Scandalous Scene

The monastery dinner leaves him still more offended, trapped between social manners and Fyodor Pavlovitch's deliberate provocations.

V-V. The Grand Inquisitor

His clash at the monastery keeps echoing after he has left town. Arguing over whether everything is lawful, Ivan and Alyosha trace the phrase straight back to the saying that so offended Miusov in the elder's cell.

IX-III. The Sufferings Of A Soul, The First Ordeal

Though Miusov has gone abroad, his standing in the family resurfaces at the inquiry when Dmitri mentions first meeting the investigating magistrate socially at his kinsman Miusov's house.
