The Mysterious Visitor's Confession

Also known as I murdered some one.

In Father Zossima's recollections, the respected official who has been visiting him finally says, "I murdered some one." The confession opens a fourteen-year burden: a hidden murder, an innocent servant blamed, and a life of public benevolence shadowed by secret guilt. Zossima listens as the visitor struggles between fear for his family and the need to tell the truth before everyone.

The visitor reads a formal declaration at his own birthday gathering, lays out the stolen keepsakes as proof, and accepts the loss of reputation as the cost of truth.

VI-II. The Duel
