Nina Snegiryov is Captain Snegiryov's gentle crippled daughter, seated beside one of the beds when Alyosha first enters the family's room. Her crutches stand nearby, and her calm, mild presence contrasts with the captain's frantic talk, Arina Petrovna's tears, and Varvara's sharp rebukes. The captain calls her an angel of the household.
IV-VII. And In The Open Air
The captain says Nina suffers rheumatic pain and needs treatment the family cannot afford. In his hopeful vision for Katerina's money, medicine and care for Nina are central.
X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside
Nina watches anxiously from her invalid chair as Kolya enters Ilusha's sickroom and bows to her as the other lady present. Her quiet attention helps steady the crowded room.
X-VII. Ilusha
When Ilusha, his father, and Kolya embrace after the doctor's visit, Nina cries quietly in her chair. Her grief is restrained but unmistakable.
Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone
At Ilusha's funeral, Nina sits close to the coffin with her head pressed to it and urges their mother to bless him. When the family returns home, she breaks into sobs with Arina Petrovna.
