Place

Obdorsk

Also known as the far North, the far north.

Obdorsk is the far northern place from which a visiting monk comes to see Father Zossima. He belongs to Saint Sylvester's, a poor monastery of only ten monks, and his arrival gives the monastery portico a wider Russian reach. At first he is simply a zealous visitor from an obscure religious house, curious and suspicious about reported healing.

IV-I. Father Ferapont

The Obdorsk monk is associated with opposition to the institution of elders, joining Father Ferapont's suspicion of Zossima's authority.

VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption

After Zossima's death, the monk from Obdorsk becomes conspicuously fussy in the excited crowd, listening, whispering, and peering in behind Father Ferapont during the scandal over the coffin.
