The Orthodox Church

Also known as Orthodox Church.

The Orthodox Church enters the monastery debate as the eastern Church to which Father Paissy assigns a promised destiny. In contrast to Western models, he insists that the State should become worthy to be transformed into the Church, not that the Church should be reduced to a department of the State. At this first horizon, the Orthodox Church is both institution and ideal, invoked as Russia's answer to modern European arrangements.

V-V. The Grand Inquisitor

In answering Ivan's Grand Inquisitor, Alyosha sharply distinguishes the freedom of the Orthodox Church from Rome, the Inquisition, and the rule of miracle, mystery, and authority.
