Perezvon is the shaggy dog Kolya keeps secretly indoors at the Krassotkin house. Kolya trains him harshly and affectionately, making him beg, feign death, and wait under command. The dog responds with frantic devotion, rushing, whining, and performing even before he is asked.
X-II. Children
Perezvon waits rigidly under the hall bench until Kolya releases him, then performs for the lodger children. His tricks include walking on his hind legs, lying dead with paws in the air, and leaping up at Kolya's signal.
X-III. The Schoolboy
Kolya takes Perezvon through the market on the way to Ilusha, while Smurov wonders whether the dog might console the sick boy. Kolya refuses any easy lie and keeps his plan to himself.
X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside
In Ilusha's sickroom, Kolya shows that Perezvon is Zhutchka, the lost dog Ilusha thought dead. The dog's marks, tricks, and joy turn the room into a rush of relief and excitement.
X-VII. Ilusha
Kolya takes Perezvon away after the doctor's visit because the dog would howl in his absence and disturb Ilusha. Ilusha imagines Perezvon as part of the visits he wants after death, along with his father and Kolya.
