Perezvon's Tricks
Also known as pretend to be dead, performed all his tricks, last performance, lie down and be dead, he'll dash in like mad, something, Dead!, Jump, Perezvon, beg!, Paid for!, all sorts of tricks.
Perezvon's tricks are the little performance Kolya uses to hold the lodger children's attention while waiting to leave the house. The dog obeys commands to beg, walk upright, and lie dead, turning Kolya's discipline into spectacle. The show lets Kolya feel masterful while also revealing how much affection runs between boy and dog.
X-IV. The Lost Dog
Before entering Ilusha's room, Kolya stations Perezvon in the passage and prepares the dog to lie dead until the right signal. The tricks become part of Kolya's carefully staged entrance.
X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside
The performance dazzles Ilusha's sickroom after Zhutchka's return. Perezvon plays dead, leaps up, balances meat on his nose, and gives the room a burst of laughter and wonder.
