Also known as Pyotr Ilyitch, Perhotin, Mr. Perhotin.
Pyotr Ilyitch Perhotin is the young official who had lent Dmitri ten roubles on his dueling pistols. Dmitri returns to him blood-stained, carrying a thick bundle of notes and asking for the pistols back at once. Perhotin helps him wash, questions him, notices the bloody handkerchief, and grows increasingly uneasy about what he has seen.
IX-I. The Beginning Of Perhotin’s Official Career
Perhotin goes first to Widow Morozov's house, where Fenya tells him about the brass pestle, Dmitri's blood, and the missing Grushenka. He then questions Madame Hohlakov, confirms that she gave Dmitri no money, and takes the alarm to the police.
IX-II. The Alarm
His evidence about the blood, the sudden money, the pistols, and Dmitri's suicide note shapes the officials' first understanding of the case. It also helps send them quickly toward Mokroe.
XI-II. The Injured Foot
Perhotin's visits to Madame Hohlakov delight her and irritate Rakitin. The narrator notes that this eccentric midnight errand becomes the beginning of the young official's remembered career.
XII-I. The Fatal Day
At trial, the pistol Dmitri redeemed from Perhotin is placed among the material proofs. Perhotin's rooms and practical observations remain part of the chain of evidence.
