President of the Court

Also known as the President, The President.

The President of the Court is the presiding judge when Dmitri's trial opens. He is described as humane, cultured, practical, and progressive, more interested in the case as a social phenomenon than as a personal tragedy. In the courtroom he begins by organizing the jury, admitting witnesses, and trying to keep the crowded proceeding within legal order.

XII-II. Dangerous Witnesses

He manages the first witnesses and repeatedly checks disorder, trying to keep testimony, cross-examination, and Dmitri's interruptions under control.

XII-V. A Sudden Catastrophe

During Ivan's collapse and Katerina's hysterical production of the letter, he has to receive impossible evidence while preventing the court from coming apart.

XII-XII. And There Was No Murder Either

When applause interrupts the defense, he warns the public that the court will be cleared if the outbursts continue.

XII-XIV. The Peasants Stand Firm

At the end of the trial, exhausted by the long day, he gives the jury its final charge before deliberation.
