Also known as the family of the retired captain Snegiryov.
The Snegiryov family is the impoverished household Alyosha finds in a cottage room on Lake Street. It includes Captain Snegiryov, his ill wife Arina Petrovna, his daughters Varvara and Nina, and his feverish son Ilusha. Their poverty is visible in the crowded room, but so are pride, tenderness, anger, and mutual dependence.
IV-VII. And In The Open Air
The captain explains that the family's dependence shapes every choice he can make after Dmitri's insult. A duel, a lawsuit, or lost work would endanger the wife and children who rely on him.
X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside
The household gathers around Ilusha's sickbed with visiting schoolboys, a puppy, and Kolya's long-awaited visit. Katerina's help has eased some material need, but fear for Ilusha now governs the room.
Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone
After Ilusha's death, the family is left grieving around his coffin, then around his empty bed and little boots. Alyosha asks the landlady to look after those who remain.
