Tchermashnya is the village and copse connected with Fyodor Pavlovitch's timber business. In Dmitri's account, Fyodor wants Ivan sent there for two or three days while he waits for Grushenka. At this first horizon it is a practical errand, but one that would remove Ivan from the house at a dangerous moment.

Smerdyakov pointedly asks Ivan why he does not go to Tchermashnya, turning the errand into a loaded question about whether Ivan will stay near Fyodor Pavlovitch's House.
