The Poles

Also known as the two Poles.

The Poles are the two Polish visitors questioned during Dmitri's preliminary investigation at Mokroe. They give their evidence with proud dignity and some uneasiness, especially when asked about Grushenka, cards, and Dmitri's offer of money. Their testimony supplies the investigators with another way to challenge Dmitri's account of how much money he had.

XI-I. At Grushenka’s

On the eve of Dmitri's trial, the same pair have fallen into poverty and send Grushenka daily begging letters with signed receipts. Their dependence on her becomes another spark for Dmitri's jealousy.

XII-II. Dangerous Witnesses

In court they insist that Pan Mitya tried to buy their honor with three thousand roubles. Fetyukovitch damages them by bringing up the substituted cards and the cheating at Mokroe, leaving their evidence surrounded by laughter.
