Place
The Prison Also known as prison, the prison gate.
One of the town's hard public institutions, first mentioned because Lizaveta Smerdyastchaya drops coins into the alms-jug there as readily as at church. At this early point it is only a sign of the town's everyday charitable and punitive order. Its gate and walls sit in the background before the Karamazov case brings them forward.
IX-IX. They Carry Mitya Away
Dmitri is ordered to be detained there after the preliminary investigation. The prison becomes the place where suspicion hardens into custody.
XI-IV. A Hymn And A Secret
Alyosha , Grushenka , and Rakitin are among the few visitors allowed unusual access to Dmitri. The interview room's peeling walls frame Dmitri's talk of suffering, the new man within him, and the secret of Ivan's escape plan.
Epilogue I. Plans For Mitya’s Escape
After the trial, Dmitri is still held there and waits for Katerina Ivanovna to come to him before the next stage of his punishment.
