The Secret Signals

Also known as secret signals, five knocks, three knocks.

Smerdyakov explains to Ivan the private knock patterns by which Fyodor Pavlovitch will open his locked door. Five knocks mean Grushenka has come, while another pattern signals urgent news. The signals matter because Fyodor trusts them completely, and because Smerdyakov has also told Dmitri about them.

V-VII. “It’s Always Worth While Speaking To A Clever Man”

After Ivan leaves, Fyodor waits in the locked house for the expected knocks, while Smerdyakov's sudden illness removes the servant who was supposed to watch and signal.

IX-VI. The Prosecutor Catches Mitya

When the empty envelope is produced during the investigation, Dmitri argues that Smerdyakov could have used the signals because Fyodor would never open the door without them.

XI-VIII. The Third And Last Interview With Smerdyakov

Smerdyakov says he used the agreed taps himself, making Fyodor open the door by pretending that Grushenka was outside.
