The Three Thousand Roubles

Also known as three thousand roubles, Katerina Ivanovna's three thousand, the fateful money, the fatal three thousand, the three thousand, three packets of hundred-rouble notes, rainbow-colored notes.

The three thousand roubles are the sum Dmitri must restore before he can face Katerina Ivanovna honorably. She entrusted him with that amount to send to Moscow, but he spent it at Mokroe while pursuing Grushenka. The same amount also appears in Fyodor Pavlovitch's sealed envelope for Grushenka, making money, jealousy, and inheritance converge around one figure.

III-X. Both Together

Katerina tells Alyosha she knows the money never reached Moscow and has tried to spare Dmitri the shame of confessing it to her.

V-VI. For Awhile A Very Obscure One

Smerdyakov's knowledge of Fyodor Pavlovitch's envelope makes the three thousand a secret household lure as well as Dmitri's debt.

VIII-V. A Sudden Resolution

Dmitri displays a large crumpled bundle of notes before going to Mokroe, but the source and exact amount are left unexplained.

IX-II. The Alarm

After Fyodor Pavlovitch is found murdered, the missing cash is presumed to have been taken from the torn envelope prepared for Grushenka.

IX-VII. Mitya’s Great Secret. Received With Hisses

Dmitri says the money he spent came from the half of Katerina's entrusted sum that he had sewn around his neck, insisting that the hidden half was his private disgrace.

XI-VIII. The Third And Last Interview With Smerdyakov

Smerdyakov produces three packets of hundred-rouble notes from his stocking and gives them to Ivan, claiming they are the stolen money from Fyodor Pavlovitch's envelope.

XII-V. A Sudden Catastrophe

Ivan brings the notes into court and says Smerdyakov gave them to him; Katerina then turns Dmitri's debt and letter into damaging evidence against him.

XII-XIV. The Peasants Stand Firm

The jury's robbery question keeps the disputed money at the center of the verdict against Dmitri.
